Painting Classes FAQ

Here are some answers to questions I get about my canvas painting classes. Please let me know if your question isn’t answered here, and I’ll add it! :)

Basics

  1. How much do your classes cost?
You’ll find the class cost next to the class listing on the schedule page.
  2. Do I need to pre-register?
Yes, please pre-register by calling 836-7722, or signing up online, so that I know ahead of time how many painters I will have. This helps with seating arrangements, supplies, etc.
  3. What is the minimum age for a painter?
I recommend ages 6 and up. Painters younger than that will most likely create more of an abstract painting. However, if that’s fine with you, then the more the merrier :)
  4. Do you do private classes?
I currently don’t have the extra time to teach private classes, but I recommend my friend Connie Bootz (the other Claytopia canvas class instructor). You can email her at bootz62@yahoo.com.
  5. Can I pay with my credit card?
Absolutely! We accept cash, check, or credit card.
  6. Can I bring alcohol to drink?
You are welcome to BYOB, as long as you drink moderately and responsibly.

About the class

  1. Are classes usually a majority of kids or adults?
I get a pretty wide range of ages in my classes. They’re usually pretty evenly balanced between kids and adults, but depending on the painting I may have more adults or more kids.
  2. Do I need to have any talent or experience with painting?
Absolutely not! I teach my paintings step-by-step, and provide extra hands-on help if you need it. If you’ve never painted, or are convinced you have no talent, then I’m sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the result :)
  3. What if I mess up during class?
If you mess up (make a stroke too thick, drop your paintbrush on the painting, etc), just call me over and I’m glad to assist! It’s better to catch your mistake right away, because it will be easier to fix it. I’ve made tons of mistakes while painting, and I have some great tips to help you!
  4. What if I’m nervous about making my shapes perfect?
We usually sketch out our shapes with chalk first. We use chalk so that if you mess up, you can easily just wipe it off! If there’s any chalk left over at the end of the night, you can wait until the next day to wipe it off with a wet paper towel. So, there’s no need to be nervous about sketching – you can just wipe it off if you mess up!
  5. What kind of paints do you use?
We use acrylic paints which we get from a few different sources depending on the color and quality.
  6. Should I leave my brush in the water when I’m not using it?
Please don’t leave your brushes in the water! Leaving them in the water makes the ends fray out, and they won’t come to a point anymore. Instead, rinse your brush in the water, and then gently dry it on your paper towel.
  7. Do I need to clean up my area at the end of class?
Nope! Part of the fun of attending a canvas class is not having to clean up afterwards! You can just leave all your stuff at the table and I’ll clean it up :)
